As we watch Cee try desperately to pack everything she needs up, the camera pans to a hallway. It introduces the first idea of the camera being our unflinching narrator, establishing what I might call the signature shot of The Invisible Man: Pan To Nothing, Pan Back. The introductory sequence, a gripping showpiece of quiet suspense, heroic ingenuity, and defining of stakes regarding our villain, finds Cee attempting to escape the literal clutches of Griffin and his sleek, isolated compound. ![]() If, while watching this film, you think to yourself, "That's unfair!" about a situation Cee is put in, it's because Whannell and Duscio have sharpened this visual vocabulary to an inhumanely human level. And oftentimes, the camera will exist liminally within these two points of views, putting both Cee and us always on a razor's edge. Sometimes it represents an unknown, uncaring, malevolent "visual narrator," eager to rub in our faces how both alone and non-alone Cee is. Sometimes it represents Griffin's point of view. Together, these two turn their camera into an omniscient, point-of-view character within the film. All of these are captured disquietingly and immersively by Whannell and his DP Stefan Duscio, who also lensed Whannell's previous genre masterpiece Upgrade. The rest of the film's engines of terror alternate between quiet, paranoid, anxiety-inducing fakeouts (is an invisible man stalking me?) and increasingly visceral moments of blunt trauma (yes, an invisible man is stalking me). Or did he? Is he, in fact, putting his research to use, terrorizing and trying to control Cee without being seen? When Cee finally escapes from Griffin, she later finds out he committed suicide. Cecilia Kass (nicknamed Cee, as in "see"), was trapped in a controlling, abusive relationship with the powerful and manipulating scientist known as Adrian Griffin (his field of science? Optics). Our hero, whom we want desperately to succeed, is his victim, played to perfection by Elisabeth Moss. His invisible man, as played with single-minded intensity and ickiness by Oliver Jackson-Cohen, is purely our villain. Not so with Leigh Whannell's prescient, incendiary take. He's a genius tortured by his monstrosity, a figure coded as a villain we are challenged to identify with. Most screen depictions of The Man Whomst Is Invisible involve him as our sympathetic antihero - think the iconography of "bandages, sunglasses, hat, and coat," as established by James Whale's 1933 classic. But in all my years of watching and loving horror cinema, I'm not sure I've ever seen "the camera" weaponized in such simple, dread-inducing, and horrifyingly satisfying ways as in 2020's The Invisible Man. And the found footage subgenre of horror makes this technique a fundamental building block. John Carpenter's Halloween of course opens with one of the great and most influential first-person genre tracking shots of all time. Michael Powell's Peeping Tom, released in 1960, features a serial killer who films his crimes with a camera, and Powell often switches to his real-time captured footage. Horror film cinematography using first-person vantage points to align with either its heroes or (more often) its villains is nothing new. But that he would leave me a sign so that I’d know he was there." That he would walk right up to me and I wouldn’t be able to see him. And without me saying a single word, he said that I could never leave him. I was planning the whole thing in my mind. The original The Invisible Man from 1933 is still a classic and an absolute marvel of its time, but it just doesn’t create the same feeling of constant dread that’s present here."One night, I was sitting, and I was thinking about how to leave Adrian. ![]() It creates severe tension and anxiety right from the start where characters never feel safe and it’s for this level of uneasiness that Whannell’s film takes the top spot. The Invisible Man is fantastic when it comes to the special effects, performances, and the score, but beyond everything else this film is just scary. Whannell takes many liberties with the source material, like making the invisibility be a suit that can be taken on and off at will, rather than a permanent curse. The most effective thing about Whannell’s movie is that it’s really a story about toxic relationships and emotional abuse that gets filtered through the old Invisible Man idea. ![]() It may seem trendy to list Leigh Whannell’s most recent take on the Invisible Man as its best adaptation, but the director has truly crafted a powerful, unforgettable piece of horror. Students are in charge of their promotion to the next autonomy level. At Red Bridge, we group students by “autonomy level,” which is based on demonstrating proficiency in work habits like time management, goal setting, and organization. For instance, we don’t group students by grade level. Orly: We’re trying to build students’ sense of control by redesigning the structures of school that typically take that away. Rick: Could you give an example of how Red Bridge works in practice? School can help students develop self-efficacy and combat the rise we’ve seen in both these conditions. A lack of agency can also contribute to anxiety and depression. COVID showed us that students who need a teacher to tell them exactly what to do are at a disadvantage when schools close and learning moves online, whereas students who are used to self-direction can continue to make the most of their learning. Students need to know how to set goals, make plans, and follow through on those plans. First, it’s not preparing students for the world we live in. ![]() Orly: The traditional education system values compliance and efficiency over agency and deeper learning. Rick: How do you explain what makes Red Bridge distinctive? This made me want to rethink how school could be designed with student agency at the center. What I witnessed there was students building the work habits to own their success, or failures-essential skills that would last them their whole lives. Later, I moved to California and worked in a very different school setting-one that emphasized mastery-based learning, individualized pacing, and the development of executive-function skills where students were encouraged to make decisions about their learning. I worked in traditional schools where much of the student’s success was determined by the school they went to and the teacher they were assigned. Orly: After college, I joined Teach For America and taught elementary school in the District of Columbia for five years. In 2018, I left my job to work on designing a school model that would lead to this outcome, and Red Bridge opened its doors Sept. The idea behind Red Bridge is to prepare students to be leaders of their own learning, so that their success is in their own hands. While we don’t aspire to open more campuses ourselves, we do hope to create a shareable model that educators can use to create more student-driven learning environments. We have 40 students in K–5 this fall and are on track to be a K–8 school by 2026. We define student agency as “the ability to set meaningful goals and have the will and skill to achieve them.” We know our program is working when students can set and follow through on their own goals, which is a requirement to be promoted between autonomy levels. This is in contrast to the traditional model of school, which is designed around compliance. Orly: Red Bridge is a demonstration school designed to build student agency as the foundation for academic and life success. ![]() ![]() In fact, the evidence shows that the trooper was not even jostled about in the car as a matter of law the automobile in this did not have such an intimate connection with the person of the trooper as to conclude that a battery had occurred.” See Williamson v. “The touching or striking in the present case was to the outer body of an automobile which Trooper Thomas was driving, with no direct impact upon or even injury to the trooper. Without the emotional intensity that Furlong and Hamilton brought to T2, Rise of the Machines is left with a cast of boring, poorly drawn characters. ![]() The absence of Linda Hamilton’s self-trained, paranoid Sarah Connor only drags Rise of the Machines down further into mediocrity. ![]() Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines has a frustratingly short supply of memorable characters. Stahl’s John Connor is, for instance, a far-blander version of the punk kid that Edward Furlong brought to life in T2. Not only does it look worse than The Terminator and Judgment Day, but it lacks the memorably prickly characterizations that helped those two films stand out. There’s just a sheen of cheapness that covers Rise of the Machines. That’s not to say that the movie’s visual effects aren’t impressive, or even that all of its action sequences are unwatchable. Rise of the Machines feels like a lesser, cheaper version of the films that came before it. In other words, the film follows the same basic formula as T2, which only makes its numerous shortcomings more apparent. Rise of the Machines follows its villain on its mission to kill the younger versions of its future enemies, only to inevitably cross paths with a T-850 (Arnold Schwarzenegger) that’s been sent back in time to prevent the death of Stahl’s John Connor. The veneer quickly begins to wear off, however, once it introduces its villain, a female-designed Terminator known as the T-X (Kristanna Loken), then uses Loken’s good looks as an excuse to make a cringey sci-fi boob joke. The film’s opening apocalyptic images are stylish, and the narration by Nick Stahl’s older John Connor sets it up to be an effective continuation of 1991’s T2: Judgement Day. Rise of the Machines feels like the genesis of all the flaws that have since plagued the Cameron-created franchise.ĭirected by Jonathan Mostow, Terminator: Rise of the Machines starts well enough. That’s certainly the case with 2003’s Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines, a blockbuster sequel that comes up devastatingly short of the filmmaking and storytelling highs of its two iconic predecessors.Ģ0 years later, Terminator 3 no longer holds the title for the worst entry in the franchise, but it will forever mark when the series started to go off the rails. More often than not, their movies only lack Cameron’s muscular, grandiose approach to action filmmaking, and the oft-forgotten heart that lifts his characters out of their archetypal shells. That’s not as easy as it sounds, which is why so many filmmakers have tried and failed to follow in Cameron’s footsteps. Throughout his career, Cameron has made films that don’t reinvent the wheel so much as operate so smoothly they remind us why we have wheels in the first place. That’s been the case ever since 1984’s The Terminator, in which Cameron delivered a rough-and-ready sci-fi horror action film that felt simultaneously refreshing and befitting of the era it was born in. James Cameron may not be the most elegant filmmaker, but his films have an assured grace that elevates them above their many inferior imitators. Once we have that *.PBK file generated, we can capture the contents, and then deploy it out to other devices via Intune (or Configuration Manager) using a very simple PowerShell script. What this manual step does is creates the *.PBK file that the VPN client uses to “dial the connection”. ![]() Once you’ve downloaded the Azure P2S config files, the next step is to manually import the config into the Azure VPN client (technically there is a way to do this using CLI parameters, however it’s frustratingly broken at the moment – I’ll talk about that another time!). ![]() Now, the end user can technically go in once the connection is deployed and set it themselves, but there has to be a more reliable way of doing this on behalf of the user – if it can be done via Intune for the native client, surely there has to be a way to enforce the setting? The answer, as always, is a resounding “of course!”.īefore we begin, the first thing we need to do is convert the config files I was given by my network team into a format that we can silently push out. The only problem? There is no way to force the “connect automatically” setting in the native VPN client, thus the client’s major requirement was not met. This VPN client is designed to compliment the native VPN client and adds support for MFA as well as allowing connections from the native VPN interface. The next suggestion was to leverage the Azure VPN Client from the Microsoft store. The problem, as it turned out is the native VPN client has a limit of 25 route rules per connection – something that *shouldn’t* normally be a problem, but was insurmountable in this scenario. If we use this, we can utilize the native VPN policies within Intune which let us define everything we need – including setting the connection to automatically connect. My first suggestion was to simply use the built-in VPN client that comes with Windows 10. The requirements were quite simple – They were building out an Azure Point-To-Site VPN solution and needed me to come up with a way to deliver the connection to the end user devices. One of my clients recently came to me asking for assistance to set up a new VPN solution. The bishop is considered a minor piece (like a knight) and is worth three points.
